Discovering Themes of Calm, Solitude, and Self-Consciousness in the Works of Andres Suarez

The Spanish graphic designer Andres Suarez contemplates themes of the human identity in his wonderful illustrations. Using warm colors, abstract forms, and relatable subjects he draws the viewer into his intimate and personal world of creativity.

Andres studied industrial design at the University of Seville, Spain and followed artistic studies of graphic design as well. Working as a photographer there sparked his interest in the discipline, and that fondness eventually led him to illustration. “Currently, I use both techniques as a method of expression and I usually make my own photographs to inspire me when it comes to illustrating,” the designer tells us.

In his creative prints, he explores several themes such as calm, tranquility, solitude, silence, pause, and self-consciousness. “My work is born from an almost therapeutic need. I work and develop my illustrations based on concerns and doubts that are presented to me on a daily basis. With my designs, I seek to provide answers to these concerns.”

Facing the complicated facets of identity, the designs feel familiar, soft, and recognizable, yet abstract at the same time. “I think I work in semi-abstraction and synthesis, illustrating the spaces in the simplest way possible, with the minimum of elements by means of colored organic stains,” Andres explains. This “papercut” technique makes for a manual character and a unique imperfection of irregular shapes, creating a friendly look. Using a warm chromatic palette of soft yellows, orange, white, and black, Andres opts for colors relating to the environment where he lives, namely the south of Spain, with beautiful beaches and desert landscapes. With a warm abstraction and simplicity, Andres speaks to each individual’s emotions.
