The German furniture company Faust Linoleum combines traditional carpentry and digital manufacturing, creating linoleum tables and tabletops in the Bavarian Alps. The family company has been an expert in environment-friendly furniture since the ‘90s. Their story begins in the early ‘80s, when carpenter and furniture specialist Franz Faust, who was working with designers in Berlin, wanted more than the luxury sector he was creating for at that moment. So he took a leap and developed his own business that would focus on people. Franz wanted his high-quality designer furniture to be available and affordable for everyone. He achieved this by combining and focusing on design, hi-tech production, high-quality materials, and elegant, functional aesthetics. Choosing linoleum as their key material, Faust Linoleum was born.

Linoleum is “a changeable, warm natural product, that corresponds to Franz’s sustainable philosophy of life,” the company notes. The material guarantees durable and high-quality products and is used for table surfaces. These are combined with the designer’s table frames resulting in versatile tables.

VISUAL PLEASURE Magazine:
Faust Linoleum has been on the market for quite some time. How has it evolved (in ideas, style, etc.) since the founding in the ‘90s?

Antonia Faust: The main idea remained the same—to give customers the possibility to creatively configure high-quality Linoleum tabletops. Since founding Faust, we are constantly working on quality improvement with new technologies and high-quality materials. With our website, our goal is to give customers more possibilities with easy usability. In addition to that, we broaden our portfolio with a shelving system, stools, and table stands. These products are the results of cooperations with interesting, young designers.

How would you describe Faust Linoleum’s style and philosophy?

We express our philosophy in our style—smart, simple, individual—a pure design, with tempting natural materials that are still affordable.

Why the focus on tables?

This is because everybody needs a table. And we like to make everyday life more beautiful.

You mainly work with Linoleum; why is that? And what other materials do you love to use?

Linoleum is 100 percent recyclable and made of renewable resources. Also, we like the wide range of color, its haptic, and longevity. There are other interesting materials we like to work with as well—cork or Lefa (leather fiber material), for example.

Eco-friendliness is an important aspect of the company. How is this incorporated?

In 2016, we built our new company building of wood. Our heating system runs on the wood residues of our production. On the roof, we have a photovoltaic system that covers 50 percent of our energy consumption. Additionally, we stock our sample kits with the rest of our linoleum and reuse our packages where it’s possible. It’s natural for us to be eco-aware!

What distinguishes Faust Linoleum from other furniture/table companies?

The big difference is that our customers can configure tabletops themselves. After they have placed their order, we start the production. We deliver with our own drivers. So we avoid transport damages, and we are able to provide a much better service for our clients.

How do you select the designers you work with?

We like to work with designers who have a strong, clear design language but are not “trendy." It’s about the perfect detail.

What is the most interesting/special/unique fact or element about Faust Linoleum?

We made this beautiful material linoleum accessible for customers who like to configure their own individual table on a high-design level.
