Surrounded by flower shops at the Agias Irinis Square in Athens, the Perianth Hotel’s name and theme derive from the inner part of a flower. The Greek word peri namely means “around” and anthos means “flower," together forming perianth. The hotel finds its home in an imposing, 1930s, mid-war modern building in the heart of Athens, Greece. The Greek architectural office K-Studio transformed the vacant building into a beautiful, natural refuge for guests to enjoy.

Keeping the rectangular form and circular and linear elements intact, the designers gave the interior an unconventional layout that makes you feel like you’re in an actual home instead of a hotel. Considering the irregularity of the building’s structure, this was quite a challenge for the architects. “We reinvented the floorplans, working around the columns and openings to create an unconventional system of rooms and communal spaces that maximizes the qualities of the building and minimizes its restrictions,” K-Studio noted in their press release.

They used the original elements, shapes, and historical style as a guideline for their design and incorporated the city of Athens in the plan as well. "We created a wider main ‘avenue’ from which smaller side ‘alleys,’ each leading to two or three rooms, were set back, creating privacy and acoustic separation for quests,” the studio explains. In this way, they reworked the traditional hotel plan to an urban layout with streets, alleys, and squares.

As art, history, and design are the main components of the hotel, it is shrouded in a sober palette of grey, beige, and green colors, complemented by natural and local materials. The mosaic tiles and bronze and marble details are reminiscent of the original heritage of the building. These historical aspects are beautifully balanced by more contemporary elements such as the minimalistic curves, pastel colors, and Greek art.

The stunning interior was furnished with custom pieces by K-Studio. Due to the design and irregular structural layout, each room has its own unique character. Being inspired by the ancient history of Athens and the Art Deco architecture, while also celebrating contemporary life and art, the Perianth offers the best of different worlds.
